For decades, anglers have come from all around the world to the Taupo region to enjoy the whizz-and-plop of a fishing line casting into a rushing river or lapping lake… not to mention the thrill of hauling in a fat, shining wild trout.
Since the introduction of brown and rainbow trout to Lake Taupo’s vast, crystal-clear waters from the late 1800s, the region has become renowned as an angler’s paradise, with Turangi as the gold standard for trout fishing in New Zealand and around the world.
There’s great fishing in all seasons, from pristine backcountry fishing on the region's many tributary rivers in summer and autumn, to spring smiling action along the river mouths and beaches, excellent dry fly fishing through summer, and autumn migration runs up the lake tributaries, as well as lake trolling throughout the year.
Junior anglers will enjoy visiting the Tongariro National Trout Centre and hatchery at Turangi, where they can try their luck in the fishing pond. There’s a wealth of experienced guides and charter captains in the area, who are happy to share their favourite spots, flies and techniques with you.
