The Taupō Destination Management Plan

Destination Great Lake Taupō is working with the community to develop a Destination Management Plan (DMP) for the Taupō region. The Taupō destination stretches from Mangakino and Whakamaru in the north, down to Tongariro in the south and includes Taupō, Tūrangi and all the land in between.

The Destination Management Plan (DMP) is about planning a future for tourism that will benefit our communities and our environment. It is about creating a plan that reflects who we are as a destination and those things that are important to us. We want to make sure that tourism creates value and is valued by all.

The plan aims to weave our cultural perspectives together to develop a DMP that outlines a shared commitment and statement of intent for the future development, protection, and regeneration of the destination. It aims to ensure our visitor economy enriches the lives of our people and place, and delivers positive outcomes across a range of social, cultural, economic, and environmental wellbeing for the benefit of future generations.

If you want to find out more about what a DMP is, you can read a summary here. Alternatively, contact Rowan Sapsford from ROAM Consulting who is helping Love Taupō to develop the DMP.

We need your help!

To make sure the DMP reflects us and our values, we need your help. We want to understand your aspirations and vision for the place we all love.

To do this we are holding a series of community workshops so that you can be involved in this planning process.

We would love it if you could come along to one of the following community sessions:

Monday 15 August at 5.30pm - Tūrangi Senior Citizens Hall

Tuesday 16 August at 5.30pm – Suncourt Hotel, Taupō

Wednesday 17 August at 9.30am - Waipahihi Marae, Taupō

Thursday 18 August at 4.30pm – Pouakani Marae, Mangakino

As it would be useful to know in advance how many people will be attending these sessions, please RSVP by emailing
