Turangi and the southern bays of Lake Taupo are bustling with hidden gems when it comes to dining, many of which are nestled amongst the most magical of settings! Here's a selection of must eats while visiting the adventure filled riverside town of Turangi and surrounding lakeside settlements. 

Turangi

Creel Cafe – a real hidden gem, blink and you could miss this cosy eatery tucked away behind a fishing tackle and gift shop. Serving the best pastries this side of Paris, scrumptious home-cooked food and great coffee. 

Hydro Eatery - right in the heart of Turangi, a popular eatery with hearty dishes and cabinet food that will be sure to fill you up after a ride on the Tongariro River Trail. Enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and superb service. 

Turangi Bakery & Cafe – discover award-winning pies with uniquely New Zealand flavours like venison, kumara and gravy, or lamb, kumara and mint.

Rust Gourmet Burger Bar – craft beer, New Zealand wine, tapas, and gourmet burgers to die for. The latest addition to the Turangi foody scene and already becoming a firm favourite.

Tongariro Lodge – lodge dining at its best, with open fire in the winter months. Beautiful fresh produce, meat and game, prepared simply to let the flavours shine through, all in a beautiful garden setting near the Tongariro River. Open for casual dining and lodge guests.

Hare & Copper Eatery & Bar - the newest addition to the dining scene in Turangi. Hare & Copper offer a range of delicious options for brunch and dinner, with shared plates a great option for groups.  Enjoy your meal in a beautiful setting at the old River Vineyard location.

Monsoon Splash of Spice - consistently delicious Indian cuisine right in the heart of Turangi, offering an extensive takeaway menu only.

Delta Coffee Cart - excellent coffee, plenty of parking and situated at the start/end of the Tongariro River Trail means this is the perfect point for pre-ride coffee or post-ride ice-cream!

Southern Bays

Lakeland House Restaurant - situated next to Braxmere Lodge in Tokaanu, is very much a destination restaurant. It is as much about the delicious food as it is about the glorious location and stunning views, right on the southern shores of Lake Taupo. Bookings essential. 

Floating Rock Vineyard and Cafe  - in Kuratau is a superb destination amongst the vines for delicious woodfired pizzas and wines produced from handpicked grapes harvested from their single block vineyard.

Oreti Village Restaurant & Bar - experience panoramic lake and mountain views, mouth-watering options, a cosy atmosphere, an extensive wine list and alfresco dining in the warmer months in the company of native birds. Bookings essential.
