Riding the Tree Trunk Gorge Trail

The Tree Trunk Gorge mountain bike ride offers an adventurous and picturesque journey through Kaimanawa Forest Park. This trail takes you through beautiful North Island beech forest, across streams and rivers, and over two impressive gorges along the upper Tongariro River. It's a grade 4 trail, perfect for experienced riders and intermediates seeking a fun challenge.

Covering 4.2 km one way, you can ride it as a point-to-point adventure with a shuttle or as a 8.4 km round trip. Parking is available at The Pillars of Hercules at the northern end or off Tree Trunk Gorge Road at the southern end. Shuttle services are also available from Taupō or Tūrangi. Starting from the northern end, the trail begins with a challenging 1 km climb before leveling out, revealing beautiful river fords and wooden bridges.

The last part of the trail features a steep technical descent followed by a challenging climb. It's best enjoyed in fair weather, as the river crossings can be quite cold in winter. Remember, mobile phone reception is limited along the trail. When you reach the end at the Pillars of Hercules, you'll be rewarded with stunning natural scenery and a great sense of accomplishment from tackling this exciting ride.
