Inaugural Lake Taupō Manaakitanga Hui Welcomes Strong Industry Support with 115 Registered Attendees
Taupō’s tourism industry gathered in force yesterday at the Great Lake Centre for the inaugural Lake Taupō Manaakitanga Hui, a vibrant event designed to connect, share, and prepare for what is shaping up to be a standout summer season.
“Yesterday was about building stronger connections between operators and the people who engage directly with visitors every day,” said Patrick Dault, General Manager of Destination Great Lake Taupō. “The energy in the room shows just how committed the industry is to creating unforgettable experiences for our visitors this summer.”
The hui attracted close to 120 registered attendees including hoteliers, hotel staff, hospitality partners, retailers, frontliners, and i-SITE representatives from across the central North Island. The Napier i-SITE team showed their strong support, joining the Taupō tourism community in force.
More than 24 tourism operators showcased updates, shared new products, and outlined what visitors can expect this summer. From adrenaline adventures to cultural highlights, the hui offered frontline staff and partners fresh insights into the region’s world-class offerings.
The event opened with a powerful welcome from the Wairakei Terraces kapa haka group, who also announced the return of their much-loved cultural hāngi and concert performances for the summer season.
The hui also featured contributions from local dining icons such as Baked with Love and The Brantry Eatery, who offered up delicious creations for delegates to enjoy. The goal was not only to connect Taupō’s tourism and hospitality sectors but also to celebrate the region’s recent recognition in Cuisine Magazine’s Good Food Guide — with five local restaurants featured and two, Embra and The Bistro, winning prestigious two-hat status.
The hui’s free-flow networking format encouraged conversation and collaboration, complemented by local food, drinks, and plenty of good humour. Spot prizes, giveaways, and opportunities to join operator familiarisation trips added to the high spirits, ensuring attendees left energised and inspired. The hilights includded gin tasting by 5 Mile Distilling, Sacred Grounds barista Coffee and Lakeman Brewery's iconic beers.
Following the hui, some attendees went on to experience Wairakei Terraces exceptional hospitality in taking part in the very first cultural experience and hangi. The tourism product it's making it's return after being stopped during Covid.
With international visitation forecast to grow and Taupō continuing to maintain strong domestic market share, the Manaakitanga Hui has set the tone for a promising summer and a more connected, resilient industry.
The overwhelmingly positive response confirms that the Lake Taupō Manaakitanga Hui will become a fixture in the region’s tourism calendar—bringing industry together, strengthening knowledge, and ensuring every visitor feels the warmth of Taupō manaakitanga, and the region's keeps it's well-desrerved recognition as one of earth's most welcoming places. So mark your calendars for August 25, 2026.
