5 ways to visit the Ngātoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings

The Ngātoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings are one of Aotearoa's most extraordinary contemporary artworks. Towering 14-metres above Lake Taupō, they are only accessible by water. Check out our guide to the 5 best ways to visit this iconic New Zealand attraction.

5 ways to visit:

1. Family-friendly boating

To keep the little ones safe and happy, you can't beat a boat cruise. The Ernest Kemp is a replica steamboat that glides peacefully over the lake, even when choppy. Plenty of indoor space and a raised rail guard around the deck so the kids can run around safely. Refreshments are available on board. The little ones will love feeding the ducks that fly up to the side of the boat and visiting the skipper to steer the wheel.

The Chris Jolly Outdoors Ngātoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings tour on the Cruise Cat liner is another family-friendly alternative, being the largest catamaran in the lake. This 90-minute tour gets you close enough to the carvings to see all the intricate detailing and has plenty of entertainment for kids, including colouring, and a treasure hunt. And if they give the skipper a big smile, they can even have a go at driving the boat!

2. Romantic sunset sails

Watch the sun go down over Lake Taupō and the mountains of the Tongariro National Park as you drift over the water on a yacht.

Taupo Sailing Adventures will take you on a sunset cruise and swim onboard the Kindred Spirit. Departing at 6:30 pm, this two-hour journey takes you to the Ngātoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings and lets you swim in the pristine lake waters, as well as providing pizza and two drinks as you sail into the iconic peach-coloured Taupo sunset.

You can cruise in style in their NEW luxury catamaran Tiua while exploring Lake Taupō. With its original character and modern comfort blend, Tiua offers a lavish 53ft sailing experience, complete with a spacious saloon, covered cockpit, and three illuminated cabins. Whether admiring the Māori Rock Carvings or enjoying a private charter, Tiua promises a memorable journey.

From December to March, Chris Jolly Outdoors offers their Cocktail Cruise daily from 5 pm. Cruise to the carvings and around Lake Taupō's picturesque bays while you enjoy a complimentary beverage in the summer breeze.

3. Kayaking

Paddle past native bush-clad hills, steep pumice cliffs and hidden bays over the crystal-clear waters of Lake Taupō on your way to the Mine Bay Māori rock carvings. Guided trips are run daily by Canoe and Kayak and Taupo Kayaking Adventures. No experience is necessary, and all equipment will be supplied. Not sure if you are able for it? Motorised kayaks are available from Taupo Kayaking Adventures, so you can relax and enjoy the scenery worry-free.

4. On a jet ski

Embark on an extraordinary adventure to explore the Ngātoroirangi Mine Bay Māori Rock Carvings with Taupō Watersports. These jet skis are equipped with cutting-edge technology that empowers you to become your own tour guide, creating an exclusive jet ski experience. Follow the GPS map to the mesmerizing carvings, or enjoy bay fun!

5. Eco-friendly yacht cruise

The Sail Barbary yacht produces no pollution, noise, fumes or vibrations thanks to their eco-friendly electric engine. The yacht is re-charged overnight at the harbour. You can enjoy the stunning scenery with a conscience as clear as the water you are sailing over.
