Lake Kuratau

Waikato

Behind the beautiful lakeside settlement of Kuratau sits the smallest but mightiest lake in the Taupo Fishery when it comes to hauling in heaps of fish. Originally part of the hydro-power scheme, Lake Kuratau is a flooded forest stocked to the brim with small rainbows and the occasional brown.

A favorite among local fishermen for the immense quantity of trout and the different techniques guaranteed for success such as trolling, nymphing, as well as wet and dry fishing. While the trout are smaller than the trophy-sized whoppers found in the neighboring Lake Otamangakau, there are enough trout to keep everyone's lines busy!

If you have kids or beginner anglers, Lake Kuratau is the fishing spot to take them. They will be hooked by the time their line hits the water.

While there are open areas for shore fishing and the ever-exciting edge stalking, you're best bet is to bring a small boat so you can access the more fishable areas and target those trout-invested weed beds. Either way, on a day out in Lake Kuratau, you are guaranteed to have a fantastic day of fishing!

Be sure to check out your local tackle shops to catch up on the know-how for hauling in a huge daily catch!
