Āta by Delani Brown

Āta – A new exhibition by Delani Brown opens at Taupō Museum

Taupō Museum is proud to present Āta, a powerful new exhibition from celebrated local artist Delani Brown, opening Saturday 13 December.

Āta is a sacred space, a place of meditation, prayer or reflection. This exhibition is a collection of works that express the artists bond with his materials. It features new works that honour the spiritual journey of Delani's creative process, including works representing revered Māori deities such as Hine-Nui-Te-Pō (goddess of the underworld) and Hine-Ahu-One (the first woman created from earth). Within the exhibition also, is a depiction of Uenuku, a figure of cultural significance, said to have travelled from Hawaiki during the great migration. The original Uenuku carving is housed at Te Awamutu Museum and was the inspiration for Delani to become a carver.

Āta invites visitors to reflect on the spiritual narratives that shape identity and space. Brown’s artistry is complemented by contributions from other local artists, making this a collaborative showcase.

Delani Brown has created some of Taupō District’s most iconic artworks, including the striking pou at Te Atea on Taupō’s lakefront which is a landmark that has become a source of pride for locals and a wonder for visitors. Delani also crafted the distinctive trophies for the international Supercars event, carved from salvaged tōtara, making them coveted prizes for competitors.

Taupō Museum exhibitions curator Piata Winitana-Murray says the exhibition has provided an opportunity for Delani to create and share from deep within himself acknowledging and sharing his taha wairua (spirituality) in this process.

“Being able to exhibit Delani's carvings at Taupō Museum is an honour, and we hope the community come in and connect even further with his craft. A master carver, Delani Brown (Ngāti Tūwharetoa) is a prolific and highly respected carver within the Taupō district, his own Iwi of Ngāti Tūwharetoa, and further afield.”

Āta runs from 13 December 2025 to 26 January 2026 at Taupō Museum. The museum is open daily from 10am to 4.30pm. Entry is free for Taupō District residents with proof of address.
