A brief history of Tūrangi

The history of Tūrangi dates back many hundreds of years when those who came to New Zealand on the Te Arawa Canoe moved south from their settlements in the Bay of Plenty and the East Coast. Known as the Ngati Tuwharetoa tribe, they settled around Taupo Moana (the island sea) from the 16th century.

In more recent times, the present town of Tūrangi was developed as a ‘hydro town’ to provide housing for the influx of workers employed to build on the Tongariro Power Project in the 1970s. However, unlike other temporary townships set up for the construction of hydro power stations around the country, Tūrangi was designed to remain a town after the project was finished.

Once the Tongariro Power Stations were complete, many workers left, but a number did stay on and Tūrangi was able to establish itself as a centre for leisure activities, as well as farming, forestry, fishing and hunting.

Today, Tūrangi is a friendly, tourist town as well as the entrance to Tongariro National Park - New Zealand’s oldest national park and one of only 29 sites around the world with dual World Heritage status. This is in recognition of both the park’s Māori cultural and spiritual significance, alongside its unique volcanic features.

An easier question to answer would be ‘what is there not to do in Tūrangi?’; Because it sure packs a punch when it comes to adventure and experiences.

Here’s a few ideas to get you started.

Fly-fishing capital of the world

Tūrangi has been known as a fishing paradise for decades; in the 1920s American adventure author Zane Grey fished here and wrote Tales of An Angler’s Eldorado about chasing trout of mythic size. Fed by crystal clear streams from surrounding mountain ranges, the water of the Tongariro River is very fresh and easily accessible.

The first trout caught in Taupo was landed in April 1904, weighing 1.36kg and ever since, keen fisherpeople have been coming from all corners of the world to visit this incredible fishing mecca.

Hiring a fishing guide who can show you their favourite fishing pools and organise your licence is the best way to get your feet wet. While you’re in town, check out the Tongariro National Trout Centre, stock up on supplies at Sporting Life Tūrangi, satisfy your appetite at Creel Cafe, and find a place to rest your head at Tongariro Lodge or Creel Lodge.

Tongariro National Trout Centre

A wonderful tourist and educational facility the Tongariro National Trout Centre has been thoughtfully built among the native trees and rivers. Home to native birds, a spring fed stream populated by huge trout protected from fisherman and a man-made, kids fishing pond populated with trout from the hatchery. Check out the Whio crèche, learn about the freshwater habitat of trout and discover what makes this place so special.

Lake Rotopounamu

Ten minutes from Tūrangi town centre, the two-hour loop walk to Lake Rotopounamu takes you through a cool beech forest populated by native birds, to the hidden gem of a white sand beach perfect for picnics.

Opotaka

Located on the edge of Lake Rotoaira (on SH47 between Tūrangi and National Park) is a historical Maori pa site (fortified village) where you can learn about the history of the famous Ka Mate Haka, see the remains of the Maori settlement, and enjoy spectacular views across Lake Rotoaira to Mt Tongariro.
