Whakapapa Ski Season: A fresh chapter on Mount Ruapehu

This winter and spring marks a new era for Whakapapa, as the ski area enters its first full season under a new 10-year concession by Whakapapa Holdings Limited (bringing long-term certainty and fresh energy to the mountain).

Perched on the slopes of Mount Ruapehu, Whakapapa is an iconic New Zealand alpine playground—and a core part of the Taupō region’s winter experience. Whether you’re here to carve turns, ride the gondola, or catch your first snowflake, the mountain is ready.

And the best part? It’s all just over an hour’s drive from Taupō.

New energy on the maunga

Whakapapa has always been a magnet for skiers and snowboarders, but this season it’s leaning further into inclusivity and first-time experiences. The mountain isn’t just for the seasoned—it’s for the curious, the young-at-heart, and the snow-touchers (those seeing snow for the very first time).
From upgraded snow play zones to bundled experiences for beginners, the vibe is simple: come as you are, and give it a go.

Snow taster: Your first snow day, Sorted

The ‘Snow Sports Taster Package’ is the most beginner-friendly package Whakapapa offer—a weekday combo that includes sightseeing, sledding, and snow play in one easy bundle. It’s ideal for first-timers, especially families or new New Zealanders looking to experience the snow without diving straight into skis or boards.

Offered during select periods outside school holidays, it’s one of the most accessible Ruapehu ski options around—both in format and price.

NOTE: Offer currently limited to the end of July.

Happy Valley: Built for beginners

There’s no better place in the country to start than Happy Valley. It’s designed to take the fear out of first steps with three magic carpet lifts (easy conveyor-style belts for learners), a beginner chairlift, wide open spaces, and expert support on-site.

You’ll probably fall over. But you’ll also laugh. And by the end of the day, you’ll be itching to come back.

Sledding without the stress

Sledding’s a classic snow activity and Whakapapa makes it simple, safe, and seriously fun. Multiple sled lanes, a dedicated covered magic carpet, and clear briefings mean anyone can jump in. It’s a hit with younger kids and just as satisfying for the grown-ups cheering them on.

No special gear or lessons required—just book a slot, show up, and slide.

Sightseeing at its peak

The mountain isn’t just for those only wanting to ride the snow. Come along to ride the Sky Waka gondola to Knoll Ridge, take in sweeping views of the Pinnacle Ridge, and explore photo spots and snow zones designed for play and wonder.

Interpretive panels share the stories of the mountain’s formation and cultural heritage, and a small cinema tucked into the hilltop hub plays short films about Mount Ruapehu ski history— including rare footage from the 1960s and local iwi perspectives.

It’s a common and neat way to connect with the mountain, whether you’re here for an hour or a full day.

Getting here is easier than you think

Many winter visitors base themselves in Taupō—and from there, Whakapapa ski area is just a sealed, scenic drive away. The road to the top is monitored daily, regularly cleared on snow days, and fully paved all the way.

Free parking is available across 10 car parking areas, and a free shuttle runs from Carpark 8 up to the Base Plaza area—especially handy on peak days. The whole experience is designed to be simple and safe, whether you’re driving up for the day or planning a longer stay.

Rentals, gear & value for every level

Whakapapa rentals are refreshed and ready—with flexible options for sledders, skiers, and everyone in between. You can book gear individually or roll it into a value-packed bundle.

Pricing has been restructured around how people actually use the mountain:

  • Happy Valley Pass—for those just starting out
  • Lower Mountain Pass—a step up for growing confidence
  • Full Mountain Access—for experienced skiers and boarders

Midweek visitors will find the best value with fewer crowds, more space, and better pricing across the board.

A season focused on firsts and value

Above all, this year’s Mt Ruapehu ski season is about creating access. Skiing has long been seen as expensive or exclusive—but Whakapapa is changing that. With beginner-focused zones, flexible pricing, and fresh ideas for families and first-timers, it’s never been easier to plan a snow day.

From snowplay to skiing, sightseeing to snowball fights, Ruapehu ski season is officially open!
