Summer buzz in Taupō: Positive start indicates a promising season ahead

Summer 2025/26 is off to a promising start in Taupō, with local operators reporting strong bookings and new attractions on the horizon, bringing optimism for the season ahead.

Date: 18 Dec 2025

Along with the warmer weather, the general summer buzz is back, and visitors are already making the most of everything the region has to offer. The line of visitors waiting to snap a photo with the iconic #LoveTaupō sign has also returned, providing a simple yet clear indicator that summer is in full swing.

Huka Honey Hive’s Jo Saville says the hive is abuzz with visitors eager to taste, discover and experience all things honey and bees. “It’s been a brilliant start to summer – people are excited to be out and about, and we’re seeing a real lift in visitor numbers”, she says.

The iconic Hole in One is back in full swing after a fresh revamp. The lakeside venue now boasts six covered golf bays, a cafe, and a brand-new “Ball Blaster” experience. Even before the finishing touches were complete, visitors were flocking to the attraction, and one lucky golfer had already scored two hole-in-one shots.

Adventure operators are seeing a similar energy. Tongariro River Rafting, shuttle operators Backyard Tours, and Kinloch’s Venture Beyond are each welcoming a steady flow of bookings, reflecting a keen appetite for outdoor experiences. Tongariro River Rafting Founder Garth Oakden said, “Summer is off to a flying start and will continue right through January. It’s great to see visitors of all ages embracing everything the region has to offer.” Meanwhile, high flying visitors are set to enjoy a premium new arrival experience with Escape Aviation’s recently opened Fixed Base Operator at the Taupō Airport, welcoming guests through their exclusive hangar and bypassing the domestic terminal. Taupō Airport General Manager Wayne Wootton said they’ve “noted an increase in private jet arrivals from around 63 in 2024 to an anticipated 90 this year”, attributing the growth in part to popular local destinations such as Huka Lodge.

Love Taupō General Manager, Patrick Dault says the district’s vibrant food scene is also a major draw for visitors. “With two restaurants earning two hats in the 2025 Cuisine Good Food Guide, and several others recognised for their excellence, it’s clear Taupō is staking its claim,” he says. The upcoming reopening of Tūrangi perennial favourite Creel Cafe as the Angler’s Table adds yet another exciting option to the region’s growing foodie offering.

“Locals are definitely in the know, but it’s exciting to see out-of-towners and international visitors increasingly discovering the top-notch quality of our fine dining destinations,” says Patrick.

Complementing the region’s attractions and food scene, accommodation providers are enjoying a busy start to the season, with visitors snapping up spots across the district. Tūrangi-based accommodation The Quarters owner Jo Street said, “We’re thrilled to be welcoming back an influx of international visitors eager to experience the Tongariro Crossing. Now that the warmer weather has arrived, there’s a real summer buzz in Tūrangi and it’s shaping up to be an exciting season ahead.”

With attractions, adventure, dining, and accommodation all thriving, Taupō tourism operators are confident that this summer will be another vibrant and successful season for the region.
