‘The Cripple of Inishmaan’ is a black comedy by Martin McDonagh. It is set in 1934 on the small island of Inishmaan, one of the Aran islands off the west coast of Ireland.
Billy is a disabled orphan who bears the brunt of the cruelty and pity of the inhabitants of the island. He was found on a beach as a baby and was taken in by two spinster sisters Eileen and Kate who own the village shop and become his “aunties”.
A film crew from Hollywood arrives on the neighboring island of Inishmore to film a documentary about life on the islands. Billy, along with Helen and her brother Bartley see an opportunity for adventure and escape from the life of poverty on the island. They convince a boatman to row them to Inishmore to try for a part in the film. To everyone's surprise Billy gets his chance to go to America to be in the film.
Some months later Billy reappears. The truth about why Billy is an orphan becomes apparent from JohnnyPat the gossip and he finally gets a kiss from his crush Helen.
But maybe his future is not all roses.
