Taupō was built for exploring on two wheels. From lakeside paths and forest flow trails to all-day adventures into volcanic landscapes, there’s a ride here for every kind of cyclist — and these days, that includes the e-bike crowd. Whether you’re chasing new scenery, easing into cycling, or just want to go further with less puff, Taupō’s e-bike-friendly trails make it easy to plug in and play.
One of the best parts about riding in Taupō is that almost every trail welcomes e-bikes. “Unless someone tells me differently, there’s no trail you can’t ride an e-bike on,” says Bria Jackson from Bike Taupō, the organisation that maintains the region’s network.
That means you can roll through Craters Mountain Bike Park, spin along the Huka Trails, or tackle the full Great Lake Trail — all on pedal assist.
E-bikes have evolved far beyond slow cruisers. There are lightweight commuter models perfect for the lakefront, and full-suspension setups that eat up the roots and rocks at Craters. Bria recommends checking in with local bike shops before you ride.
“They’ve got the best knowledge — they’ll set you up with the right bike for the terrain and the type of riding you want to do.”
An easy, scenic classic that hugs the lake’s edge from the town centre to Five Mile Bay. Cafés, swimming spots, and picnic areas line the route — perfect for first-time e-bikers.
A local favourite. Start near Spa Thermal Park and follow the Waikato River to Huka Falls and Aratiatia Dam. The trails flow through bush and riverside tracks — fun, manageable, and rewarding.
E-bike heaven for those wanting a taste of singletrack. Green and blue loops offer a balance of challenge and fun. Note: a visitor pass or membership is required — available online or on the spot from 4B Bike Park & Shuttles across the road.
Big scenery, native forest, and views across the lake. Shuttles can drop you at either end, and e-bikes make the full-day rides accessible to more people. Check in with 4B Bike Park & Shuttles for logistics and guided options.
Families are discovering the freedom of e-biking too.
“We used to find biking with our son pretty stressful - someone would always get tired too early… Now we ride from home to Craters and back, no problem. It’s made it fun again.”
Bria Jackson
Local operators like 4B Bike Park & Shuttles, Torpedo7, Pack & Pedal, and My Ride Taupō all offer e-bike hire, including options for kids.
It’s a great way to try before you buy — or to get the whole family rolling for a day of lakeside adventure.
Running low on battery? Taupō makes it easy to power up — for both you and your bike. You’ll find free Locky Dock e-bike charging and locking stations at two handy spots: on Tongariro Street by the Taupō Library, and outside PAK’nSAVE. Secure your bike, plug in, and recharge while you grab a coffee or explore town.
To use the stations, download the Bikeep app, or pick up a free access card from the Taupō Library or the Taupō Customer and Visitor Information Centre.
You can also plan your stops using the Locky Dock map — perfect for keeping your adventures rolling all day long.
The Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge now includes e-bike categories in both road and mountain bike events. If you’re visiting for race weekend, stay a few extra days — the local trails are all e-bike-friendly, and with pedal assist you’ll have the range to explore more than one in a day.
Whether it’s your first time on an e-bike or your fiftieth, Taupō delivers rides that recharge you as much as your battery. Pick your trail, power up, and see how far the freedom takes you.
