Chasing Waterfalls: Best spots to see iconic (and secret) waterfalls around Taupō

You can’t think of Taupō without thinking of water. Clear, running, always moving.

From the thunder of Huka Falls to the gentle meander of gin-clear streams hidden deep in the backcountry bush, the landscape around Taupō flows with H2O energy. It’s everywhere—you’ll hear it before you see it: a low roar beyond the pines, mist hanging in the air, that sudden moment when the forest opens and the river reveals itself. There’s no shortage around these parts. It’s always on the move, and when it finally tumbles off a ledge on its journey, we all stop to admire it. Because, let’s be honest, everyone loves a waterfall.

Everyone loves a good waterfall tip. So instead of sending you off to bush-bash your way through mystery trails, here’s the local’s guide with the greatest hits of Taupō waterfalls, ready for you to chase (or just soak in—pun intended) without getting your feet too wet!

Huka Falls from every angle

The sheer power of Huka Falls—she’s a crowd-pleaser, that one. The mighty Waikato River squeezes through a volcanic gorge, exploding into an unforgettable rush of turquoise that you can feel in your chest. Watch from the bridge or the walkways above, get sprayed on a jet boat ride, or drift close on a river cruise.

Chasing waterfalls in the Western Bays

For something different, hop aboard Venture Beyond’s ‘Chasing Waterfalls’ explorer for a two-and-a-half-hour voyage that’s pure Taupō. Leave from the Kinloch Marina to discover pristine scenery, remote bays and sheer lakeside cliffs fringed by virgin bush filled with birds, tumbling waterfalls, spray, and smiles all the way. Vibes guaranteed.

Second acts and secret tracks

If you’re chasing more than the headline act, over in Tongariro National Park, the Taranaki Falls Walk rewards an easy hike with alpine drama: snow-fed water tumbling through black volcanic rock, framed by Ruapehu on a clear day. That almost sounded poetic! Some might say it is.

Just below Whakapapa Village, Tawhai Falls tumbles 13 metres over an ancient lava flow in Tongariro National Park. It’s an easy 15-minute stroll through toatoa and beech forest to reach the lookout—short and sweet. Film fans might recognise it as ‘Gollum’s Pool’ from The Lord of the Rings, but even without the fame, it’s pure magic. A small walk with a big payoff.

For serious explorers, rumour has it that if you venture far enough into the hills you’ll find secret falls that don’t make the brochure, hidden deep between the Kaimanawas and Kawekas.

Water finds a way, and waterfalls find you

You don’t chase waterfalls in Taupō, they ambush you. One second you’re in the bush minding your own business, next thing you’re covered in mist and grinning like a local. That’s the Taupō way—the water’s always moving, and so are you.

These are the greatest hits, sure, but Taupō’s got more waterfalls than we could ever squeeze onto one page. They’re tucked behind tracks, hidden off bike trails, and whispered about by locals who know where to look. Go find them. We’ll be over here adding to the list… or maybe saving that for the next blog.
