The heart of Aotearoa New Zealand’s North Island, the Taupō region is a place of extraordinary natural beauty – a vast, sparkling lake, trout-filled rivers, ancient forests, steaming geothermal zones and towering snow-blanketed mountains.
Taupō is not only the name of our Lake, but also the name of our main township and the name of our district.
We have compiled together a beginner guide to Taupō below.
Taupō is centrally located in the middle of the North Island of New Zealand, about 3.5 hours drive from Auckland and 4.5 hours drive from Wellington. Taupō is within a two-hour drive of Waitomo Caves to the west, Hamilton to the north, Tauranga to the east and Ruapehu to the south. Closer to Taupō you will find the trout fishing mecca of Tūrangi and the world-famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing within the Tongariro National Park is close by.
