Your luxury fishing package at River Birches

Day one

Take the scenic drive to Taupo today and check in to your luxury accommodation at River Birches in Turangi.

Spend the afternoon exploring your surroundings and wander the Tongariro River Trails, just a short stroll from your accommodation. These scenic trails traverse stunning native bush and offer magnificent views of the spectacular Tongariro River.

This evening you will experience a gourmet five course dinner at River Birches with a glass of wine to accompany. Then relax beside the fire and discuss your plans for the following day with your fellow guests.

Day two

Enjoy a full gourmet breakfast this morning before heading out on the river with your experienced fly fishing guide. Spend half a day surrounded by the beauty of the Tongariro River, while learning how to catch your very own brown or rainbow trout. For experienced anglers you will be shown the best spots along the river, and enjoy a few uninterrupted hours to reconnect with your passion.

After lunch take the scenic drive to the Tongariro National Park, where you will have the opportunity to ride the country's longest gondola. The Sky Waka travels 1.8km to a height of 2020 metres, leading you to New Zealand's highest dining experience at the Knoll Ridge Chalet. Take in the breathtaking views of the Dual World Heritage listed Tongariro National Park, and watch the skiers and snowboarders as they carve up the snow.

For keen hikers and walkers there are a huge range of walking trails to be explored here, from short 30 minute tracks such as the Tawhai Falls track or the Ridge Walking Trail, to the slightly more adventurous Taranaki Falls Loop or Silica Rapids trails.  Alternatively start making your way back towards Lake Taupo, and explore the remote Lake Rotopounamu Loop track, a favourite with bird watchers.

There are plenty of dining options on offer this evening, both within Turangi and the surrounding area. Enjoy lakeside dining at The Lakehouse or Oreti Village Resort Restaurant. Or experience Turangi's trout fishing routes at Tongariro Fishing Lodge or the delicious Hare and Copper Restaurant.

Day three

This morning it's another early start, this time to head out of the expansive waters of Lake Taupo. After your gourmet breakfast Production Fishing will take you on either an eco tour of the southern bays, or spend the time fishing on the lake under the expert guidance of Bill Grace, and enjoy an entirely different experience to the fly fishing of yesterday.

Time for one more adventure this afternoon at the Tongariro National Trout Centre. Here you can learn all about this world class fishery and the fresh water world of trout. Meander through the fresh water aquarium to gain an insight into the history of trout fishing in New Zealand and the other fresh water species often seen in our rivers and lakes. Then wander around the riverside trails to view the Whio Creche, where the very endangered blue duck chicks are reared until they are able to survive out in the wild.

As your luxury escape concludes, be sure to stop off at the many cafes in Turangi town centre for a coffee and some lunch. Then head home, dreaming of your next escape to the North Island's central plateau.
