Rangatira Point Track

Acacia Bay

This easy walk winds through native bush along the lake edge, offering fantastic views and great picnic, swimming and fishing spots. It's perfect for families and those wanting to enjoy Lake Taupo.

Three car parks along the length of the track provide options for shorter or longer walks.

From the first carpark, the track follows around the lakeshore to Tōtara Bay and provides excellent views of the lake back towards Taupo and Mount Tauhara. There is a large group of pines at Te Karaka Point at the far end of the bay. A side track from this point leads back to Acacia Bay Road and the second car park.

The main track continues to Rangatira Point, where again there is a side track to Acacia Bay Road and the third car park.

The final section of track continues out to Whakamoenga Point and passes at through private property - keep to the track marked as public access. Return via the same track, or by using Acacia Bay Road.

Whakamoenga Point

At Whakamoenga Point you can explore the flat volcanic rocks and enjoy the views towards the south and west, taking in the expanse of Lake Taupō, and on a clear day the mountains of the Tongariro National Park.

This is a popular spot for swimming, fishing and picnicking and is only a 30 minute walk from the third car park.

Getting there: Follow Acacia Bay Road past the boat ramp and on for another 2 km. The track starts at the first car park on the left, but can also be started from two more car parks further down the road.
